WE understand that Oscar-winning film director Sidney Pollack is starting work on a film about the life of Enzo Ferrari. The 62-year-old American visited Maranello in February for preliminary discussions about the movie.

Pollack is no stranger to motor racing. In 1976 he made Bobby Deerfield - which starred a young Al Pacino - with help from Bernie Ecclestone's Martini Brabham Alfa team. The driving in the movie was done by Brabham driver Brazilian CarlosÊPace.

Although Bobby Deerfield was not a great commercial success, Pollack went on to win Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Film for Out of Africa and enjoyed enormous commercial success with movies such as Absence of Malice (with PaulÊNewman), Tootsie (with Dustin Hoffman) and The Firm (with Tom Cruise).
