Lando Norris claimed pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix after edging George Russell by 0.102 seconds in a tense qualifying session at Zandvoort.
The reigning world champion completed a perfect qualifying day for McLaren, which had led every session, by producing a decisive 1m11.163s on his final Q3 run. It was Norris’s second pole of the 2026 season, following his Budapest success at the previous round.
Norris had held provisional pole with a 1m11.344s before rain threatened the seaside circuit and prompted the field to hurry out for another attempt. He and Russell briefly raced for track position on their out-laps, but Norris crossed the line first and improved. Sprint winner Russell responded with a 1m11.265s, narrowly missing top spot.
With showers approaching, the closing minutes became a battle for clean air as drivers scrambled to complete laps before conditions worsened. The rain ultimately held off long enough for the leading contenders to settle the front rows on slick tyres.
Kimi Antonelli briefly led before finishing third, only 0.133s behind Norris, while Oscar Piastri completed the second row. Ferrari secured the third row through Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, ahead of home favourite Max Verstappen and temporary Red Bull team-mate Liam Lawson.
Gabriel Bortoleto took ninth for Audi, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad reached Q3 for a fifth consecutive event. Pierre Gasly narrowly missed the top-10 shootout and qualified 11th, one place ahead of returning Racing Bulls driver Yuki Tsunoda.
Nico Hulkenberg, Franco Colapinto and Esteban Ocon followed, with Ocon outqualifying Haas team-mate Oliver Bearman at consecutive rounds for the first time since May 2025. Alex Albon was 16th, while Carlos Sainz suffered another Q1 elimination in 17th.
Aston Martin’s upgrades could not lift Fernando Alonso or Lance Stroll beyond 18th and 19th. Bearman took 20th, leaving only Cadillac newcomers Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez behind him.
