Martin Donnelly

Quiet and introspective away from a racing car, this Ulsterman was an outstanding performer in junior league single seaters and won the prestigious 1988 Cellnet award as Britain's most promising young driver after he finished third in the British Formula 3 Championship for the second successive season. Donnelly drove for Eddie Jordan in 1988 and 89 before being selected to partner Derek Warwick in the Lotus-Lamborghini lineup the following year. He was lucky to escape with his life when he crashed at high speed during practice for the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez, sustaining multiple injuries from which he thankfully recovered, but which brought his professional career to an end.
