Schumacher escapes unhurt after heavy crash in Monza

Michael Schumacher has escaped unhurt after a heavy crash during testing today in Monza. The Ferrari Driver's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said Schumacher spun and hit the barriers while approaching one of the fastest parts of the track at around 300kph.

"Something happened to the left rear tire, we don't know what yet, on the start/finish straight," said Kehm after the accident in the late afternoon. "The car spun and hit the wall with the rear. Michael got out and laid down on the grass as a precaution."

Despite the extremely heavy impact of the crash, Schumacher did not go to the medical center but flew back to his home in Switzerland after the session ended. He apparently had been due to finish testing Thursday evening before next week's Italian Grand Prix.

From all accounts Michael is said to be fine and is ready for Ferrari's homecoming at the Italian Grand Prix. Michael and the team have already clinched the constructors and drivers championships for the 2004 season.
