Berger and Volkswagen

Gerhard Berger is being linked to a possible Formula 1 return with Volkswagen. Berger has quit BMW, saying that he wanted a rest and time with his family but he also added that he might not be finished with F1 in the longer term. Berger says that he is not interested is simply continuing in the role has held for the last five years with BMW but would probably have made a different decision if BMW had decided to build up its own F1 team.

Volkswagen has consistently denied any plans to enter F1 in the immediate future but the company boss Bernd Pischetsrieder has long been a fan, dating back to when he was in charge at BMW. If he did decide to send VW into F1 it is logical that he might use Berger as the front man. Pischetsrieder was the man who hired Berger for the BMW Motorsport job.

There continue to be rumours that VW is in discussions with Sauber but Berger says that he has "not received a solid offer from Volkswagen".
