Stewart's solitary tribute to his mentor

KEN TYRRELL was honored by the man he made world champion, Jackie Stewart, when the BRDC president visited this weekend's Silverstone Historic Festival.

Tyrrell, who died in the small hours of Saturday morning after battling with cancer in the pancreas, ran Stewart in Formula 3 in the early 1960s before the Scot joined BRM's Formula 1 team, then the two joined forces once again in 1969 when they took the Matra-Ford to the world championship at their first attempt.

After an unsuccessful season with a customer March in 1970, Tyrrell began building his own cars, winning the world championship with Stewart at the wheel in 1971 and 73.

It was at the wheel of the 1971 title-winning car, the Tyrrell-Ford 003, that Stewart - now Sir Jackie paid an his tribute. The 62-year-old drove three laps of Silverstone on Monday, the final day of the annual event.
