Mexican GP 1992

Mexican GP, 1992

Andrea Moda Formula had paid its $100,000 entry fee for the World Championship but the team spent the entire weekend in Mexico building up its Simtek-designed cars and so did not even look like going out to qualify. The entry was the same as it had been in South Africa and in qualifying it was a dominant Williams 1-2 with Nigel Mansell ahead of Riccardo Patrese. Michael Schumacher was third fastest in his Benetton ahead of his team mate Martin Brundle and the McLarens of Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna. The Brazilian had a terrible time in practice, crashing heavily in the Esses on Friday and suffering serious bruises to his legs while Berger also crashed at the same place but did not hurt himself.

In seventh place was JJ Lehto in his Dallara-Ferrari, just ahead of Mauricio Gugelmin's Jordan-Yamaha and then Pierluigi Martini's Dallara. Jean Alesi was 10th in the disastrous Ferrari F92A and Ivan Capelli was 20th.

In the race Mansell took the lead from Patrese while there was chaos in the midfield as Karl Wendlinger (March) collided with Capelli's Ferrari.

Senna took third ahead of Brundle, Schumacher and Berger. On the second lap Schumacher passed Brundle while in the early laps Senna began to drop back and went out on lap 12 with a transmission failure

Eventually Patrese began to drop back from Mansell while Schumacher was a lonely third. Brundle and Berger were fighting over fourth place and passed and repassed one another before Brundle disappeared with an engine problem. This left Andrea de Cesaris in fifth with his Tyrrell having worked his way through the midfield in impressive fashion. Mika Hakkinen scored the last point in his Lotus.
