Georges Berger

The first Berger to race in Formula 1 was a Belgian amateur who competed in a variety of machinery in the 1950s, including the Formula 2 BMW-engined Jicey with which he finished third in the 1950 Grand Prix des Frontieres at Chimay. In 1953 he raced a Simca-Gordini at Chimay and finished fifth and then entered the same car in the Belgian GP. He retired after just three laps with engine trouble. The following year he raced a factory Gordini on several occasions, finishing seventh on the streets of Bordeaux and in the French GP at Reims where he retired early with engine trouble. A week later he finished fourth at Rouen but then drifted away from single-seaters. Later in his career his high spot was sharing the winning Ferrari with Willy Mairesse in the 1960 Tour de France. He was killed racing a Porsche 911 in the 1967 Marathon de la Route at the Nurburgring.
